Walking in Le Marche and Umbria: 4 places you must see!
Our B&B Fonte Fresca is located in the Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi Natural Park. The B&B is an ideal starting point for beautiful walks in the immediate area and other walks in Le Marche and Umbria! For example, you can walk on Monte Cucco, the chalk cliffs and beaches at Ancona, Monte Catria and even in the Sibillini Mountains.
Walking from our B&B above the Frasassi caves.
A beautiful walk, which we also take regularly, starts right at our B&B and leads to the top of the Montagnana. From the top you have a 360 degree view! You look over part of Le Marche, you see the Ariatic coast, Monte Conero, Monte San Vicino and the Sibillini Mountains. Monte Cucco and Monte Catria in the province of Umbria are also clearly visible. And with a little luck you can spot the Golden Eagles circling majestically above your head. These eagles have their nesting place in the Gola delle Rossa e di Frasasassi Natural Park.
From a viewpoint along the walking route you look down on the towns of Genga and St.Vittore. Here is also the starting point for a visit to the famous Frasassi caves. These caves are literally located in the mountain below our B&B and are a real tourist attraction. This largest cave complex in Europe was only discovered in 1971! And what most visitors to the caves don’t know is that the original site (entrance) is located along one of our hiking trails!
(More about the Frassasi Caves in one of the upcoming blogs!)
Walking on Monte Cucco or Monte Catria just across the border in Umbria.
There are also places in the area that we regularly visit for a walk. Monte Cucco is such a fantastic place. Less than 20 km from us as the crow flies! You drive by car to the parking lot high in the mountains and from here you start your walk. The top at over 1600 meters can be reached on foot and the view from here is also phenomenal! And on a beautiful, sunny day you are not only on the mountain, but you will also find the paragliders there. They have their take-off and landing site on Monte Cucco. There is also a cave system in the mountain that can be visited.
Monte Catria, about 45 minutes from our B&B, is also a beautiful area for walking. Here too you can enjoy a beautiful view of Le Marche and Umbria. Ideally, you can take the cable car from Caprile all year round to the top of the mountain! In winter the ski area is located here with approximately 12 km of slopes.
Walking over the chalk cliffs at Ancona and looking out over the Adriatic Sea.
A sunny and clear day is ideal for a walk with a view over the blue Adriatic sea. Walk along the beach or look down on the beaches of Sirolo, Portonovo and Numana from the high chalk cliffs. The nature reserve around Monte Conero is the area you should definitely visit that day. The highlight for us is the walk over the chalk cliffs with the route to the Due Sorelle. And if you are lucky enough to have very clear weather, you can see the coast of Croatia from the chalk cliffs!
You can hike to great heights in the Sibillini Mountains
Other literal highlights can be found in the Sibillini Mountains. With mountain peaks above 2600 meters, the Sibellini Mountains are the southernmost high mountains in Europe. The flower splendor in May, June and July is truly breathtaking. And the location of the town of Castelluccio is enchanting! Unfortunately, the town itself was largely uninhabitable due to the 2016 earthquake and is awaiting restoration. But after a walk we always enjoy it on one of the terraces.
Le Lame Rosse is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the Sibillini Mountains and is also a must when hiking in this area. After the walk, it is wonderful to enjoy the beach or one of the eateries at the nearby Lake Fiastra.
We also know many other places for you where you can enjoy a peaceful walk and enjoy all the beauty that our area has to offer. We would like to tell you where you can take these walking tours.
Suitable for walking in all seasons.
Because we live in Italy all year round, we have noticed that all seasons have their appeal. In spring and early summer everything is fresh in color and there is a true display of colors because the wild flowers and shrubs are in bloom.
Around the beginning of June, the plateau in the Sibillini Mountains is transformed into a true color spectacle. The crops sown in the spring blossom and many Italians visit this area to enjoy the show of color. This is, so to speak, “the bulb region of Italy”.
In the summer the trees are in full leaf and you can also find beautiful routes where you can walk large stretches in the cooling shade. It is useful to start your trip fairly early in the morning, because the temperature can rise considerably during the day. After the walk you can cool off in the Adriatic Sea, Lake Cingoli or Fiastra. Or of course in our small cooling pool at the B&B. It is good to know that Le Marche and Umbria belong to the green heart of Italy. Due to the favorable climate, these regions remain very green even in the summer!
In autumn and winter it is also wonderful to walk here. In the sun the temperature is often still very pleasant and the view is often even more beautiful, because the air is often very clear. And when there is snow, nature changes into a fairytale landscape.
Walks of varying difficulty and distance.
So various walking tours are possible. Tours vary in distance, but also differ in difficulty. Most hiking trails are well marked and indicate the approximate time it takes to reach the indicated point. There are routes that are simple and easy to walk. More difficult tours are also possible. This will indicate whether routes contain dangerous or more difficult parts. Ropes have been installed on some routes to make it easier to descend or climb steeper sections, sometimes you even have to be on your hands and knees for a bit. Good walking shoes are therefore a must for most walking tours.
If you would like, we have various walking routes available for you. And if you like it, we’d love to walk with you!
